Dolphin Whistle ~ 8.27.2025

Principal’s Message:

Hello Dolphins,

Tonight is Back to School Night and our staff is excited to welcome you into classes so you meet the teachers and learn a little about classroom expectations. This is a great way to start building relationships with your classroom teachers AND more importantly meet other families in your child’s classroom.

At Back to School Night, you will find out how your classroom operates, any important information about your child’s schedule like when is PE, Music, Art, STEAM, How your teacher plans to communicate with you, and how you can communicate with them. This is also a great opportunity to sign up to be a volunteer in your child’s grade level or classroom.

I look forward to seeing you all tonight at 6:00PM sharp.

A few  important reminders:

Back to School Night means Minimum Day Today

Today is a minimum day. School dismisses at 12:10 for all students.

School News

School Site Council

We need you!!!

Mariano Castro  Elementary School is forming its School Site Council for the 2025-2026 school year.  It will consist of five staff members and five parents/community members.  The School Site Council is very important as it is responsible for developing the school goals and budget with the Principal. There are (2) vacancies for parent/community member positions, and these positions will be filled by an election.

The Mariano Castro Elementary School (SSC) works with the Principal to provide guidance and oversight on the goals in the Mariano Castro Elementary School Site Plan.

The Site Plan sets the achievement goals for the school in academics and school culture. It outlines the strategies and actions to achieve those goals. The SSC may also take on additional tasks and responsibilities as requested by the Principal. This is a great way to learn more about Castro and meet other parents and staff to support your child’s education.

If you are interested, please email me at [email protected] or talk with our front office staff. We will plan to hold an election with interested people next week.  Castro really needs you, please let us know if you can support us!

School Counselors

As you may know, this year all of our MVWSD schools are continuing with full-time counselors. For Castro, that person is Kiera Henry-Duran. We are excited to have access to this valuable resource. Our counselor is here to support our students' social-emotional and mental health in numerous ways. She will be working with students whole-classes leading social-emotional lessons. She will also be working with students in small groups to support building healthy friendships and develop conflict resolution skills, and for some students she will provide one-to-one counseling support to achieve individual goals. Furthermore, Ms. Kiera will also be available as another caring adult on our campus.

Ms. Kiera will also be available to support families in order to support student well-being. One recommendation that she has as a start for parents is the Parenting Space. This is a great beginning resource for families in this district.

Updating Contact Information

It is important we have your most current contact information (phone number, email address, emergency contacts). If you have a change or want to add an authorized person to pick up your child, please send an email to our front office staff at [email protected] with any changes or updates you may have.

Short-term Independent Study

Short-term Independent Study is a contract that allows students to work independently when there are circumstances that make attending school difficult. Short-term Independent study can range from a minimum of 3 days and a maximum of 14 days per school year. Contracts are approved on a case-by-case basis, require a 2-week notice, and require students to be in good academic and attendance standing.

While we know that some absences cannot be helped, it is important to do your best to have your child in school as much as possible. Whenever you can, try to avoid taking trips during the school year -- or make efforts to take trips during District holidays (2025-2026 School Year Calendar). Our office staff can assist you with contract details: Ms. Antunez [email protected] or Ms. Judy [email protected].

*Please note, if the contract is not approved, the days will be counted as unexcused and the student may be considered truant.

*Also note that extending vacation is not considered an excused absence. Students will be considered truant if they accumulate absences for vacation purposes.

District News

Looking for an afterschool program? Read on to see if your child qualifies for MVWSD+!

A student qualifies for the free MVWSD+ afterschool program if one or both of the following conditions are true:

  • The student is an English Learner (EL). EL status is established via the results of the Initial ELPAC exam, which is being administered to certain students in August and September. Results are usually available within two weeks of the completion of testing. If you have questions about the Initial ELPAC exam, please contact Leticia Corcoran at [email protected].

  • The student qualifies for free or reduced-price lunches based on federal income guidelines. At this time, lunch for all children is free, but this may not always be the case. To fill out the application for free or reduced lunch, please go to ezmealapp.com. Qualifying students’ data is collected at the state level and usually appears in the district’s data system within two weeks. If you have questions, please contact your school office.

Soon after a student’s EL or Free/Reduced Lunch Status changes to indicate he/she qualifies for MVWSD+, you will receive an email from the MVWSD+ Team inviting your child to enroll.

For questions or troubleshooting, please reach out to [email protected] or Betty Nunez at (650) 526-3500 x1061.
