CAASPP test results available for MVWSD
This is the image for the news article titled CAASPP test results available for MVWSDEach spring, California students participate in the statewide testing program, the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP). The tests in CAASPP provide information to teachers, parents/guardians, and students about grade-level progress and readiness for college and career.

In spring 2017, children in grades 3-8 took the Smarter Balanced Summative Assessments or California Alternate Assessments for ELA (English/language arts/literacy) and mathematics. Students in grades 5 and 8 participated in the new California science field test. These CAASPP results with data from 2015-16 will be included in the state’s new School Dashboard set to release in January 2018.

MVWSD shows gains in some areas and improvement needed in others, as shown by the release of the 2016-17 results by the California Department of Education this week.

Highlights
The District maintained a 66% of students meeting and exceeding standards districtwide in English Language Arts
The District gained 2% points in the number of students meeting and exceeding standards in math across the District.
Castro has made substantial growth over three years. The % of students meeting and exceeding standards went from 19% to 45% in language arts and from 16% to 41% in math from 2014-15 to 2016-17.
While scores in English Language Arts for Hispanic/Latino students remained flat this year, MVWSD maintained the gain of 10% points between the 2014-15 and 2015-16 test. The District is closing the achievement gap for Latino students, as outlined in Strategic Plan 2021.
While there was a 1% dip in scores in English Language Arts for socio economically disadvantaged students (SED) this year, MVWSD gained 9% points over three years for SED students in English Language Arts and gained 3% in math over three years.

There is work to do. The District:
Saw declines at certain areas. Fifth-grade English Language Arts scores declined across the District. All of our neighboring Districts, as did the state, saw a decrease in fifth-grade language arts.
Had a three-point decrease from last year in seventh-grade math, but it still netted a 10-point gain over the 3-year period.

Next steps to increase student achievement:
There are many factors that play into gains or declines in student achievement, which leads to the important work of analyzing data and making adjustments.
The District adopted new curricula (examples: Benchmark Advance in language arts, Eureka Math). The District will continue to provide professional development for the curricula and has updated pacing guides to support teachers.
All teachers were trained in SIOP (Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol) this year to better support all students with a specific focus on English learners
This year, all elementary schools will implement a Response to Instruction (RTI) program. The District has provided additional teaching staff to meet the needs of all students, whether they need extra support or challenge.
Expanded the District’s preschool capacity
Added an additional part-time middle school literacy coach
